Summer Summer time!

We always love return clients. We made a Bird's nest cake and this Ladybug cake and a few others for Bisi in the past.
This time around, we made some summer themed cupcakes for a barbeque. Who doesn't love summertime? I'm a warm-weather kind of girl and love all things summer (minus the bugs) :o)

We made barbeque-themed cupcakes (don't worry, they didn't taste like bbq sauce). These were red velvet cupcakes topped with the yellow and green swirl vanilla buttercream. The toppers- all made out of fondant - consisted of kebabs, grilled hotdogs, grilled steak and red and white checkered table clothes.

We also made vanilla cupcake minis with pink, yellow and blue vanilla buttercream, topped with a variety of bright/summer colored flowers.

What's a summer cookout without corn-on-the cob, burgers and watermelon?

The song "Summertime" by Will Smith comes to mind! (did I just date myself? lol)

Thank you Bisi for trusting us with a crucial part of your celebrations!

Suitcase cake

I'm always amazed at how wedding celebrations vary across cultures. A few weeks ago we had the honor of designing and creating a traditional engagement suitcase cake for a Nigerian couple.
We started off by sketching a stack of 2 suitcases with a couple dressed in Nigerian traditional attire (made out of fondant and gumpaste) sitting on the top tier.

The colors of the day were lavender and champagne/ivory.

The flavors of the cake consisted of vanilla pound cake with vanilla buttercream filling and a traditional Nigerian fruit cake. This cake flavor is very unique because it is made with raisins and 'aged' in brandy over time to give it a distinct flavor.

As we learned here, sometimes your eyes play tricks on you and sketching and the real life turnout are 2 totally separate things (lesson learned- sketching is only used as a guide lol).

As you can see, the iniital sketch called for only 2 tiers. When we stacked the cakes, it didn't quite create the 'pizazz' effect we were going for- so we decided to add a 3rd tier/suitcase for a better effect!

We finished the cake with a gold-ish/tan-ish sheen to give the 'worn suitcase' look

Congratulations Kemi and Samson!

Fairytale Books Cake

We loved working with Wren's parents to design her first birthday cake. They knew what they wanted which always makes the process smoother :o)

Wren's parents came up with the original idea. We went through a few sketches before we decided on this design.

When we first designed the cake, the leaning book was supposed to be on the left (see sketch above) but somehow, in reality, it looked better and more "stable" on the right.

The flavors were red velvet with french vanilla swiss meringue buttercream and french vanilla pound cake with french vanilla swiss meringue buttercream.

For the fairytale books theme, Wren's parents chose Alice in Wonderland, Black Beauty and The Secret Garden". I have to say making this cake took me back to my childhood.

We also incorporated different elements from each book around the cake. For The Secret Garden we had "buttercream grass" and flowers, for Black Beauty we had a fondant horse (not pictured).

Wren's name was written on a bookmark.

For Alice in Wonderland, we had "Alice with a twist" made out of fondant . She had an afro and her outfit, while similar to the original, was ankara print. We also had other items from the story such as the cheshire cat, pocket watch, the caterpillar with the hookah bottle, smiling flowers and a teapot.

Happy Birthday Wren!
